Don't Make Emotional Choices

THEY DON'T CARE

You can't make choices about your weights based on what you want. WEIGHTS DON'T GIVE A FUCK WHAT YOU WANT. You have to make choices on what you reasonable can do, or what you should be able to do.

Let's say you're a 700-lb. squatter but you want an 800-lb. squat. You go to a meet and open at 700 for your opener, 740-750 for your second attempt, and then you call for 800 because that's what you want. Then you miss 800.

Simply put, this tells us almost nothing because 750-800 is such a big jump. We only know you're at 750.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

What matters? What you can realistically do.

One of the biggest challenges in the sport of powerlifting is that there is so much emotional. We're emotional creatures by default.

The cold hard truth is that you are only going to get what you earn and deserve... and sometimes those don't even work out.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HIT THAT WEIGHT?

Let's say you hit that third attempt at 800 lbs. That's awesome you hit the weight, but what happens after that? Where do you go from there?

That's the problem. It's very difficult to grow from there.

Think about the next 18-24 months of training. Chances are you won't be PR'ing. Are you able to handle that mentally? Because this is where most people will throw in the towel and quit.

HERE'S THE ALTERNATIVE

Let's say it takes you two years to get to that number, but you get it in the first six months. It's still going to take you two years to go past that number. You're going to go through a year and a half of banging your head against the wall for a 5-lb. PR.

BUT, if you were patient over those two years, you could have consistently hit 5, 10 and 20-lb. PR's. And guess what? You'd more than likely surpass 800 pounds.

It's all about staying with it. Setting yourself up this way creates momentum, lengthens your career, and gives you a bigger overall total. All because you stuck to the plan.

If you have plans of staying in the sport for the long term, you must train smart and take non-emotional weights. Doing so will keep you in the game longer, keep you healthier, and will give you a bigger lifetime total.
