Stop Chasing Numbers You Haven't Earned

Stop Chasing Numbers You Haven't Earned

Don't identify with a total you don't have yet.

Everyone has a milestone they want to hit.

A 1,500-pound total. A 2,000-pound total. A state record. An elite total.

The problem starts when that number becomes more important than lifting what you're actually capable of that day.

A lifter capable of totaling 1,900 loads attempts to total 2,000. They miss their second and third attempts and leave with an 1,830 total.

Build your total over time

The only thing that matters is that your total is going up. Sure, you want to swing for the fences sometimes, but not every time.

If you keep adding to your total meet after meet, the big milestone becomes much more likely.

You don't want to identify with a total you don't have yet. Earn it, take the lifts you're capable of making, build confidence, and when the time is right, swing for the fences.
